Energy for Life

Project: The Mighty Mitochondria

How does the anatomy of a mitochondria support its function?

The Site of ATP Production
The Site of ATP Production
Where does cellular respiration take place?

Teacher Note

This STEM project relates to cellular respiration and energy. As students build their models, they will gain a better understanding of where energy is produced within the mitochondrion. Their detailed labels will serve as a review of the organelle. This project should be done alone and as a take-home activity. Provide students with adequate time to complete their models.

Use the Internet and other resources to investigate the structures and functions of the mitochondria. Then construct a well-labeled model of this organelle, paying particular attention to the sites needed for ATP production. Be sure to include a model of ATP as part of your mitochondrion. Attach a detailed explanation of all the parts of your model.

Screen Resolution - This interactive media is not optimized for the current screen resolution. To view the interactive, try changing your device orientation to a horizontal landscape view.
Write a description of the materials you used, why you used them, and how they apply to the structure of the mitochondrion. Then explain how energy is produced within this organelle.
