Cell Structure and Function
Project: Make Your Own Microscope
Microscopes can be very large and expensive, but how can you construct one using a cell phone?
Teacher Note
Students should submit their procedure before beginning. If students are unable to see the Elodea, have them go back and check their steps to make sure they set up their microscope correctly. This project can be used as either a summative or formative assessment.
This project builds on the work you just completed in the Hands-On Lab: Examining Cells and Tissues. Complete that lab before beginning this project.
Use the Internet to research how to turn a cell phone into a microscope. Design a procedure that you could use to first create your microscope and then use it to reanalyze the Elodea from the Hands-On Lab: Examining Cells and Tissues. Complete an outline of your procedure and a materials list. Submit it to your teacher. Once it is approved, conduct the experiment and record your observations. Provide an analysis of your results.
